Звичайний каштан або гіркокаштан - дерево 30-36 м заввишки з гарною густою кроною і товстим гіллям. Ареал гіркокаштана звичайного охоплює відносно невелику ділянку Балкан — гори Піндус. На своїй батьківщині ці дерева утворювали широколистяні ліси, які подекуди збереглися і в наш час. В природі їх плодами живляться олені і вивірки, нечутливі до дії отруйних сапонінів. З XIX століття цей вид почали вирощувати в парках і на вулицях міст у всіх помірних кліматичних зонах світу, таким чином й ми маємо можливість працювати з деревиною звичайного каштану. Старе гілля брунатно-сіре за кольором й має однорідну структуру, що м'яко обробляється, даючи можливість для творчості й модклювання з формою. Тож попереду ще багато творчих експерементів з цим чудовим деревом...

From the XIX century, this species began to grow in parks and on the streets of cities in all temperate climatic zones of the world, thus we have the opportunity to work with ordinary chestnut wood. The old branches are brownish-gray in color and has a homogeneous structure that is mildly processed, giving the opportunity for creativity and modification with the form. So there are still many creative experiments with this wonderful tree ahead...
