Дуб – священне дерево Перуна. Культ Перуна був поширений як у слов’ян, так і у балтів. Дубові гаї і навіть цілі ліси оголошувалися священними, що допомогло врятувати їх від вирубування. Більшість священних гаїв були неприкрашеними, вільними від штучної модифікації та маніпуляції. У них панувала абсолютна заповідність, і охоронний режим у них був суворіший, ніж у сучасних природних заповідників. Це був священний простір, вільний від змін, привнесених зі сторони людини. Найстаріший дуб у лісі вважали місцем перебування божества. Деяким з цих священних дерев приписували силу покарання людини, яка їх зрубає, смертю або тривалою хворобою. Такі дерева заборонялося рубати, порушники ризикували померти або надовго захворіти. Нерідко священні дуби огороджувались дерев’яним парканом або ровом. Вхід до загороди був заборонений усім, окрім жерців, та тих , хто збирався принести пожертву. Жерці слухали голос божества, як вважали, який жив у гілках, і робили передбачення. По-різному шелестить листя: тихо і спокійно, грізно, напружено — від цього залежала і суть передбачення. А восени дівчата збирались біля святих гаїв «слухати духа», який шелестом падаючого листя передбачав їм майбутнє...

Most of the sacred groves were unadorned, free from artificial modification and manipulation. They were absolutely protected, and their protection regime was stricter than in modern nature reserves. It was a sacred space, free from the changes brought by man. The oldest oak in the forest was considered the abode of the deity. Some of these sacred trees have been credited with punishing the person who cuts them down with death or long illness. Such trees were forbidden to cut down, violators risked death or illness for a long time. Sacred oaks were often surrounded by a wooden fence or moat. Everyone except the priests and those who were going to make a donation was forbidden to enter the fence. The priests listened to the voice of the deity, as they believed, who lived in the branches, and made predictions. The leaves rustle in different ways: quietly and calmly, menacingly, tensely - the essence of foresight depended on it. And in the autumn the girls gathered near the holy groves to "listen to the spirit", which with the rustle of falling leaves foretold their future...
